5 shorts that caught our eye

We rounded up five of the best recent Vimeo Staff Picks.  Prepare to be moved, entertained, amused, inspired and informed.

Shelter is a beautiful short doc filmed on location in Chiapas, Mexico.  It tells the stories of adults and children who have migrated to Mexico in an attempt to escape gang violence in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador.   It’s a quiet look at lives on the line and I defy you to watch it without getting a lump in your throat.

9 Ways To Draw A Person is an amusing look at inspiration.  It mixes abstraction, collage and drawing to explore the potential of animation and “leads us into the world of irrepressible imagination.”  Surreal and compelling.

The only music video on this list, Freedom Fighter is a disturbing look at modern entertainment, social media and motherhood.  Ruby Rose Fox describes herself as a cultural messenger of our turbulent modern times. Her music is as sonically compelling as it is subversive, packed with lyrics that reflect and challenge our current political state.

Want to see the death mask of E. E. Cummings, a lock of Walt Whitman’s hair, Jack Kerouac’s boots or the cane Virginia Woolf carried to her death?  Then head over to the New York Public Library to view their Collection of Weird Objects (a.k.a. the Berg Collection). Or watch this film.

Beautiful Idiot has an absorbing VO that explores what it means to win, lose and keep trying.  As we follow professional freeride mountain bike rider Brett Rheeder, the film muses upon the mindset and motivations of those who feel driven to pursue greatness, how it can feel to fall short, and the consequences of reaching a lofty goal when the struggle to get there has defined you for so long.
